TildeTech

Instructions for installing Version 7 (or later) TildeTech kits

TildeTech provides two installation kits:

  • Software – installs the TildeTech programs and the ‘Standard7’ game dictionary

  • Dictionaries - installs six additional game dictionaries, and the word definitions file

The installation kits run on a Windows PC – and then using Microsoft’s ActiveSync (or Vista's Windows Mobile Device Center), performs the installation on a Windows Mobile device.

BEFORE INSTALLING TILDETECH’S VERSION 7 (or later) SOFTWARE:

  • On your Windows PC, if you have Version 6 (or earlier) of the TildeTech kits installed, uninstall them using the “Add or Remove Programs” tool in the Windows Control Panel.

  •  On your Windows Mobile device, if you have Version 6 (or earlier) of the TildeTech kits installed, uninstall them using the “Remove Programs” tool in Settings.

  • On your Windows PC, you will need Microsoft’s .NET Framework Version 2 installed before you can install the TildeTech kits.  If the system is up-to-date using Microsoft’s Windows Update, then .NET version 2 should already be installed.  If not, then you will be prompted to install .NET version 2 during the TildeTech installation.

Note for Windows Vista users - during installation, you may receive several warnings that "An unidentified program wants to access your computer".  Answer "Allow" to each request.

Instructions for installing the Version 7 TildeTech Software kit on your Windows PC and your Windows Mobile device:

  1. Download the latest TildeTech Software kit from one of the online stores or this website.

  2. Run the kit (an .msi file).

  3. If you do not have .NET version 2 installed on your Windows PC, the following page will be displayed from the TildeTech website:

Follow the instructions to download and install the version of .NET 2 appropriate for your system, by clicking on the appropriate ‘here’.

  4. If you have an older version of the TildeTech products installed, you will receive the following message:

Click ‘OK’, and then ‘Close’ in the next window.  Using the “Add or Remove Programs” tool in your PC’s Control Panel, remove both the TildeTech Software and TildeTech Dictionaries kits on your Windows PC.  Using the “Remove Programs” tool in the Settings on your Windows Mobile device(s), also remove the Software and Dictionaries installations.  Then re-run the .msi file.

  5. If you receive this warning again on your PC, then use Windows Explorer to delete the entire TildeTech folder in Program Files, and re-run the .msi file.

  6. Follow the directions with the TildeTech Software installer to complete installation on your Windows PC.  When the PC installation is completed, you will see the following window:

    Press Close.

  7. If ActiveSync is installed on your PC, installation will be attempted to your Windows Mobile device.  You should now have the following window displayed on your PC:

Click ‘OK’.  This will cause ActiveSync to copy the kit to your WM device.

  8. On your WM device, if asked to install the kit to your ‘Storage Card’, it is recommended to select ‘Storage Card’.

  9. If the installation fails, check the ‘Remove Programs’ list on your WM device to see if ‘TildeTech Software’ is still listed.  If so – remove it, and then try re-installing (on your Windows PC, go to the ‘Start’ menu, go to the ‘TildeTech’ folder, and select ‘Install TildeTech Software on Windows Mobile Device’).
If ‘TildeTech Software’ isn’t listed, then use the ‘File Explorer’ tool to remove the TildeTech folder from ‘Program Files’ – and try re-installing again.

  10. When you first run the TildeTech software on your Windows Mobile device, you may receive the following warning:

"This application (xxx.exe) requires a newer version of the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework than the version installed on this device."

If you receive this message, dock your Windows Mobile device to your PC.  On your PC, go to the 'Start' menu, select the 'TildeTech' folder, and then the menu item for installing .NET Compact Framework 2 on your Windows Mobile device.

  11. This will display a page from the TildeTech website:

Click on ‘here’ to start the download to your Windows PC.  You will then see a windows like this:

Click on ‘Run’.  The download will begin – and once completed, the installer will be started.  You may see another window, like this:

Click ‘Run’ again.  Follow the instructions with Microsoft’s .NET installer.  It will install the kit on your PC and copy it to your WM device.  On your WM device, if asked where to install .NET, it is strongly recommended you install to your ‘Storage Card’.  Once .NET is installed on your device, you will be asked to do a ‘restart’ – click OK – and wait for your device to finish the restart and redock to your PC before proceeding to the next step.

NOTE that once Version 7 (or later) is successfully installed, most of the above steps will be skipped, and re-installation of the TildeTech Software kit should run smoother.

Installation of the Dictionaries kit is similar, though it will skip some of the above steps, because the kit doesn’t contain any .NET programs – just data.

REINSTALLATION ON WINDOWS MOBILE DEVICES:  You may encounter a warning message when re-installing the TildeTech Software kit on Windows Mobile devices.  During installation, if asked to “Remove the previous version”, answer YES.  If you encounter a warning message that the previous version could not be completely removed, perform a soft reset, then try to remove the previous version of the Software kit using the “Remove Programs” tool in Settings.  If that fails, manually delete the TildeTech folder – and perform the Remove Program again.
